Oxycodone is a very strong internal narcotic pain-reliever and cold cough suppressant similar to the effects of morphine, codeine, and hydrocodone. The actual mechanism of action is not very well known but may involve the stimulation of the opioid receptors in the human brain. Oxycodone does not very much eliminate the sensation of intense pain but decreases the discomfort by increasing bodily tolerance to pain. In addition to the tolerance to pain, oxycodone also causes brain sedation and common respiratory depression. The FDA approved the use of oxycodone in 1976.
